Threat of asteroid impact looming over Earth: experts
London, June 7 (PTI) The risk of a large asteroid crashing against the Earth increases significantly every few years, prevents scientists who analyzed Czechs 144 fireballs from a recent meteor shower.
The meteor shower Tauride showed a significantly increased activity in the year 2015. The researchers found that this was due to a well-defined orbital structure.
Researchers at the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences showed that a “new branch” of Taurids contains at least two large asteroids 200-300 meters.
Since many asteroids or even larger tape are likely to be present, the risk of impact increases significantly when the Earth encounters the new Tauride branch every few years, the researchers said.
The Taurid meteor stream produced at least four time showers on Earth: both are active at night from late September to early December and two days from late May to mid-July.
While the 2P / Encke comet is the most likely main body of the Tauride flow, it was also proposed that 2P / Encke is only a fragment of a much larger comet, which was disrupted for thousands of years and formed the entire Tauride complex, including A number of asteroids.
However, many asteroids on offer may have similar orbits by chance.
In some years, the activity of Tauride was greater than usual, especially in terms of number of bright meteors or fireballs.
“We have carried out a comprehensive analysis of 144 fireballs Tauridas observed by the new digital observatories fireball autonomous European network of fireball moved to the Czech Republic to 13 stations in Austria and Slovakia in 2015 when the activity Has been improved, “the researchers said.
The orbits of 113 fireballs show common characteristics and together form a well-defined orbital structure.
The masses of the meteoroids observed were within a range of 0.1 gram to over 1000 kg.
“We found that all meteorites over 300 grams were very fragile, while those under 30 grams were much more compact,” the researchers said.
The newly discovered Taurid branch is a group of people ranging in size from several millimeters to several hundred meters, which move around the sun.
The narrow range of orbital parameters of the new branch makes the association with these Taurid asteroids much more reliable than before was possible.
Every few years, the Earth encounters this branch for a period of about three weeks.
Meanwhile, the impact of an important asteroid opportunity (tens of meters) has been greatly improved. Although intrinsically weak, the body of this size can penetrate deeply into the atmosphere and pose a danger to the ground. PTI SAR MHN MHN
